📍 Trentino-Alto Adige
The Alpine north with two provinces and two languages.
Trentino-Alto Adige is a region in northern Italy by the border with Austria. It has two provinces: Trentino with the city of Trento, and Alto Adige, or South Tyrol, centred on Bolzano. Both are Alpine, and they speak different languages: Italian in Trentino, while in South Tyrol many speak German. The vineyards lie in valleys and on mountain slopes. Days are warm and nights cool, so the wines are fresh and aromatic. Among whites, Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay and Gewürztraminer are known; among reds, Schiava, Lagrein, Trollinger and Teroldego. Many wines go under the common name Vigneti delle Dolomiti. Trentino also makes sparkling wine by the bottle-fermentation method. The region is part of Italy's wine map. Wine names here often sound in two languages, because speakers of different languages live side by side. Trentino-Alto Adige is not the largest region, but it has a large share of wines of protected origin.
