📍 Limburg (Netherlands)
The hilly south with chalk slopes and the Maasvallei and Maastricht appellations.
Limburg is the southernmost province of the Netherlands and the country's main wine area. It consists of hilly land around Maastricht, with chalk slopes and clayey marl soils. The district is part of Dutch wine. It includes the Mergelland area and the Maas valley, and the region's wine appellations are Maasvallei Limburg (PDO) and De Voerendaalse Bergen.
Winemaking in the Netherlands is small: in 2023 about 210 commercial vineyards covered more than 300 hectares, and about half of that was in Limburg, 61 estates on 147.5 hectares. The other vineyards are in Gelderland and other provinces, but the main areas are South Limburg, the Achterhoek and the Betuwe.
Winemaking near Maastricht is known from very early times: medieval inventories already mention vineyards near the city, but around 1946 the last one had disappeared, and later entrepreneurs began planting vineyards again, mainly in Limburg.
Growers plant Pinot Noir, Malbec, Riesling and a number of cold-hardy varieties. In the Netherlands nine wine names are registered as PDOs, among them Maasvallei Limburg. South Limburg borders Belgium and Germany.
