Marl hills near Maastricht.

Mergelland is a small wine appellation in the south of the Netherlands, in the province of Limburg, around the city of Maastricht, near the borders with Belgium and Germany. The name means marl land: the hills here are made of calcareous marl. It is the hilliest part of the Netherlands.

Winemaking in the Netherlands is small but growing. The climate is temperate and maritime with cool summers, so early-ripening and disease-resistant varieties are chosen. Growers plant Pinot Noir, Auxerrois, Riesling, Müller-Thurgau and Pinot Gris, as well as hybrids such as Regent, Johanniter and Solaris. White, red and sparkling wines are made.

Vineyards lie on the south-facing slopes of hills, for example near the village of Vijlen. Many estates are small, family-run and sell wine on the spot.

Mergelland is part of Limburg and of Dutch winemaking. Belgian Haspengouw and German Mosel lie nearby, and the wines resemble theirs: fresh, light, with bright acidity. Mergelland whites suit fish, and the sparkling wine makes an aperitif. The name Mergelland on a label shows that the grapes grew in this very area, which makes it easy to look for similar wines.
