📍 Mallorca
The largest island, with the Binissalem and Pla i Llevant zones.
Mallorca is the largest island of the Balearic archipelago in the Mediterranean and belongs to Spain. Vineyards lie on the plain in the middle of the island and on mountain slopes. Summers are hot and dry, winters mild, and sea winds freshen the climate. The Serra de Tramuntana range in the north-west is on the UNESCO list as a cultural landscape.
The island has two main DO appellations: Binissalem-Mallorca in the centre, near the town of the same name, and Pla i Llevant in the east. There is also the regional zone Serra de Tramuntana-Costa Nord. Red, white and rosé wines are made, and vines are mostly grown as bushes.
The main red grape is Manto Negro, soft, with light acidity and scents of red berries and herbs. Callet, Fogoneu and international grapes are added to it. Among whites there are Prensal (also called Moll), Giró Ros, and newer wines from international grapes. Escursac is a rare local red. Vineyards often sit next to olive groves and almond orchards.
For comparison with its neighbours: the island stands among the other Balearics, with Menorca and Ibiza nearby, and across the sea on the mainland lie Catalonia and Valencia.
