📍 Nahe

The Nahe valley with a patchwork of volcanic and slate soils.

The Nahe is a wine region in the state of Rhineland-Palatinate in Germany, along the Nahe river, which flows into the Rhine at the town of Bingen. The region is known for the most varied mosaic of soils in Germany: volcanic rock, clay slate, quartzite, sandstone and loess occur in a small area. As a result wines from neighbouring plots can differ greatly from one another.

The main grape is Riesling, made into dry, off-dry and sweet wines with scents of citrus, peach and stone. Müller-Thurgau and Silvaner grow alongside, and among reds Dornfelder. The region is known for cool nights and for hills that soften the winds, so the grapes ripen slowly and keep their acidity.

The centre of the region is the spa town of Bad Kreuznach. Among famous wine villages are Schlossböckelheim and Niederhausen. Vineyards often lie on south-facing slopes above the river. The only subregion is the Nahetal. The local wine with a geographical indication is called Nahegauer Landwein.

For comparison with its neighbours: to the north lies the Mittelrhein, to the west the Mosel, to the east Rheinhessen and to the south the Pfalz.
