π Dornfelder
A German red grape bred in 1955, one of Germany's main red varieties.
Dornfelder is a German red wine grape, bred in 1955. It was created at the wine institute in Weinsberg by crossing two other varieties, Helfensteiner and Heroldrebe. The name honours Immanuel Dornfeld, the founder of the Weinsberg school of viticulture. The grape quickly became popular and today is among the main red varieties of Germany. It is grown in the Pfalz, Rheinhessen and Nahe. It gives dark, rich wines with an especially deep colour, soft tannin and notes of cherry, blackberry and plum. The wines can be light and fruity, or aged in oak and full. Dornfelder is not as refined as Pinot Noir, but it is valued for brightness and juiciness. It is often used in blends with other reds. It is in the parentage of newer varieties, such as Acolon and Monarch. Cabernet Dorsa and Cabernet Dorio were obtained with its involvement. Dornfelder is served slightly chilled, with meat dishes and sausages, as is usual in Germany.
