Grape variety ✔ Checked: 10.2026 · sources: 3

An aromatic grape with pink berries, bred in the Czech Republic in 1953.

Pálava is an aromatic grape with pink berries, bred in Czechia in 1953. It was created by crossing two varieties: Traminer and Müller-Thurgau. The name comes from the Pálava hills in South Moravia, near the town of Mikulov, where winegrowing has a long history.

The variety has a bright floral aroma similar to Traminer: rose, Muscat, petals. The wine is full and aromatic, with moderate acidity. Dry wines are made from Pálava, as well as off-dry and sweet ones, and in good years it is picked late to give rich dessert wines. The variety likes warm slopes and ripens well.

Pálava is tied to Czech wine and to Moravia, the country's main wine area, and to the Mikulov zone. It is one of the varieties created in Czechia specially for the local climate. It is related to Traminer and Müller-Thurgau, so it shares features with both. Outside Czechia and Slovakia it is seldom seen.
