📍 Moravia
The south-east of the country, with about 96% of the vineyards.
Moravia is the south-eastern part of Czechia, where about 96 per cent of all Czech vineyards lie. The rest are in Bohemia. The climate is warm and dry, and in the south of the country, on hill slopes, summer lasts longer than in the rest of Czechia. Vineyards lie on gentle slopes and along the Dyje and Svratka rivers. Moravia is divided into four subregions: Znojmo, Mikulov, Velké Pavlovice and Slovácko.
The Lednice-Valtice cultural landscape, on the UNESCO list, lies right here, among vineyards and parks. Winemaking traditions go back to medieval monasteries, and later wine was made at the courts of the Moravian nobility.
Among white grapes, Grüner Veltliner (Veltlínské zelené), Riesling and Welschriesling (Ryzlink vlašský) and Müller-Thurgau are the most commonly grown. Among reds St. Laurent, Blaufränkisch (Frankovka) and Cabernet Moravia are common. Moravia has also bred its own grapes: Pálava, Aurelius, André, Neronet and others. The regional wine with a geographical indication is called Moravské zemské víno.
For comparison with its neighbours: to the south lies Austria's Lower Austria, to the east Slovakia, and to the north there are almost no vineyards.
