An Italian coast with stone vine terraces above the sea; a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Cinque Terre is a stretch of Italian coast in Liguria, known for stone terraces of vines above the sea. The name means "five lands": five small villages on a steep shore. Together with Portovenere and the islands, this area is on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

The slopes here are very steep, and people had to level them. To do so they built dry-stone retaining walls without mortar, creating many narrow terraces. Vines are tended on them by hand, and sometimes small rail carts are used. The terraces were built over centuries, and the total length of the walls is huge.

Local grapes make white wines. The best-known sweet wine of the area is called Sciacchetrà, made from semi-dried berries. Cinque Terre wine goes well with fish and seafood. It is one of the most beautiful wine areas in Italy and an example of vineyard terraces where wine and landscape are inseparable. Work on the slopes is hard, so the wine is not cheap.
