Sangria
How to make it at home: Sangria — ingredients, steps, safety tips.
Time: 10 min + at least 1 hour chilling (best overnight) · Yield: 6 servings
Ingredients
- 2 oranges
- 2 pears
- 2 lemons
- 200 g red berries (strawberries, cherries)
- 3 tbsp sugar
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- ice
- 750 ml light red wine
- 100 ml Spanish brandy
- 300 ml sparkling water
Method
- Slice the oranges, pears and one lemon, squeeze the juice of the other lemon and add the berries.
- Sprinkle the fruit with sugar and cinnamon, cover and chill for at least an hour, ideally overnight.
- Fill a jug with ice, add the fruit, pour in the wine and brandy and stir.
- Top up with sparkling water just before serving.
Tips
- In the EU the plain name “sangria” is reserved for a drink produced in Spain or Portugal: a wine-based drink with natural citrus extracts, between 4.5 % and 12 % ABV.
- The white version is called “clarea” in Spain, and sangria with brandy is “zurra” (9–14 %).
- Sangria is not heated, so all the alcohol from the wine and brandy stays in the drink.
