🍷 Serving temperature
Reds are served cool, whites colder and sparkling wines colder still.
Serving temperature is the temperature at which wine shows its best. If the wine is too cold, its aroma is hidden. If it is too warm, it feels heavy and spirity. Each type of wine has its own comfort zone.
The general rule is simple. Red wines are served cool, around 14 to 18 degrees, not at room temperature. White wines are colder, around 8 to 12 degrees. Sparkling wines are colder still, around 6 to 8 degrees. Light reds can be chilled slightly, and sweet whites are best served cold.
To bring wine to the right temperature, it is chilled in the fridge or in an ice bucket. Ice and water go into the bucket, and the bottle cools in 15 to 20 minutes. If the wine is too cold, it warms up in the glass in your hand.
The glass also affects temperature: a white wine glass is narrow and keeps coolness longer. Serving temperature is part of wine-drinking culture. Remember that the figures are approximate and tastes differ. Alcohol is for adults.
