🍷 Sogrape
Also known as: Sogrape Vinhos
A Portuguese family wine company founded in 1942 by Fernando van Zeller Guedes; the company of Mateus, it also owns Sandeman, Offley and Casa Ferreirinha.
Sogrape is a Portuguese family-owned wine company with its headquarters in Avintes, near Porto. According to the company, it was founded in 1942 by Fernando van Zeller Guedes together with 15 friends as the “Sociedade Comercial dos Vinhos de Mesa de Portugal”; Wikidata gives the same year. Mateus was born together with the company, and the Guedes family has run it ever since.
According to the company, its brands include Mateus, Sandeman, Offley, Porto Ferreira and Casa Ferreirinha. It makes wine in the country's main wine regions, and also in Spain, Argentina, Chile and New Zealand. Sandeman, the Port and Sherry house, has belonged to Sogrape since 2002.
Sogrape works with many designations rather than one. Under EU law a wine with a protected designation of origin (PDO, in Portugal DOC) must come entirely from grapes of the defined area and be made there, while for a protected geographical indication (PGI, Vinho Regional) at least 85% of the grapes must come from the area. Port and Douro wines are separate PDOs of the same Douro region.
Why it matters to you. The company name on the back label says who made the wine, while the PDO or PGI says where the grapes grew. The WHO reminds: there is no safe level of alcohol.

⚠️ Wine contains alcohol: adults only, drink in moderation. Wine usually contains sulphites; egg white or milk proteins are sometimes used for fining — important for allergies and for vegans.
