Also known as: Taylor's, Taylor's Port

A Port house in Vila Nova de Gaia known as Taylor's; according to the house, founded in 1692 by the English merchant Job Bearsley and devoted entirely to Port.

Taylor, Fladgate & Yeatman, known as Taylor's, is a Port house with historic cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia. According to the house, its story begins in 1692 with the arrival in Portugal of the English merchant Job Bearsley; Wikidata gives the same year. The firm took its present name after John Fladgate and Morgan Yeatman signed a partnership deed in Oporto in 1838; the name Taylor comes from Joseph Taylor, who led the company earlier.

According to the house, it is devoted entirely to Port. It owns quintas in the Douro, among them Quinta de Vargellas, bought in parts in 1893 and 1896. The house says it pioneered the LBV category and first blended Chip Dry, a dry white aperitif Port, in 1934.

Port is a wine with a protected designation of origin (PDO) from the Douro Demarcated Region. Grape spirit stops the fermentation, so at least 17.5 g/l of sugar remains, and the strength is 19–22% vol. An LBV comes from a single harvest, is certified in the fourth year after it and bottled by 31 December of the sixth.

Why it matters to you. LBV, Vintage and the age of a Tawny are set by the rules, while names such as “Chip Dry” are the house's own. The WHO reminds: there is no safe level of alcohol.
