π Sultana
A white seedless grape, the most widespread variety for raisins and eating.
Sultana, or white Kishmish, is a white seedless grape. It is known under several names: Sultana, Thompson Seedless. It is the most widely used grape for raisins and also one of the popular table grapes. The berries are small to medium, oval, greenish-golden, sweet and seedless.
The grape comes from the Middle East and Central Asia, where seedless grapes have been grown for a very long time. From there it spread around the world, including to Turkey, Greece, California and Australia. It is dried in the sun and makes pale raisins.
In breeding, it serves as a parent of other seedless varieties. This grape is in the pedigree of Perlette, Lakemont, Thomcord and many others. Thanks to it, new seedless table grapes that buyers like have appeared.
Wine is also made from Sultana, but rarely and usually simple. The main uses are fresh berries and raisins. The berries can be eaten whole, without spitting out seeds.
