π Vidal Blanc
A white hybrid grape bred in France, the main grape for Canadian ice wine.
Vidal Blanc is a white hybrid grape variety. It was bred in France by the breeder Jean-Louis Vidal, who crossed Trebbiano (Ugni Blanc in France) and Rayon d'Or. A hybrid is a variety whose ancestors belong to different vine species. Such varieties are usually more resistant to frost and disease.
Vidal Blanc tolerates cold winters well, so it is grown in North America, including Ontario in Canada. The berries keep their acidity and hang on the vine for a long time without spoiling. They make dry, off-dry and dessert wines. The variety is best known for icewine: a sweet wine made from berries frozen on the vine. In Canada it is especially valued.
The variety is tied to French wine by origin, and it has its own offspring, such as Villaris and Felicia. Vidal Blanc is in the list of grape varieties. For cold regions it became a reliable base where not every variety survives the winter.
