🍷 Vigneron (grape grower)
A person who grows grapes; a vigneron often also makes wine from them.
A vigneron, or grape grower, is a person who grows grapes. In French the word is "vigneron". A vigneron often makes wine from the grapes too.
The work goes on all year. In winter, vines are pruned. In spring, shoots are tied up and protected from frost. In summer, growers watch the foliage and disease. In autumn, the harvest comes. All this happens in the vineyard, and the care it gets shapes the quality of the future wine.
Many growers belong to winemaking cooperatives: they deliver grapes, and the wine is made jointly. Others run their own estates and sell wine under their own name. Saint Vincent is regarded as the patron of grape growers, and in some regions his day is marked in January. A grower is essentially a farmer whose field is made of vines. The job needs knowledge of soil, climate and grape varieties. The job needs good health and patience, since much of the work is done outdoors in any weather.
