🍷 Winzersekt
A grower's German Sekt: from the estate's own grapes and only by the traditional method.
Winzersekt is a German sparkling wine that a grower makes from their own grapes. The word means 'winegrower's Sekt'. It is a special, stricter kind of Sekt.
The rules are tight. The grapes must come from the estate's own vineyards, and the base wine is made there too. The bubbles are produced only by the traditional method, a second fermentation in the same bottle, as in Champagne. The wine rests on its lees for at least 9 months.
The label must show the vintage, the grape variety and the estate. Riesling is common, along with Pinot Blanc, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Such wines are usually made in small batches.
Winzersekt appeared in the 1990s as an answer to mass-market Sekt, which is often made from bought-in wine in large tanks. It belongs to German wine and shows that Germany can make high-quality sparkling wine.
