🍇 Airén
A white grape from La Mancha, Spain; one of the world's most planted by area.
Airén is a white grape from La Mancha in Spain. By planted area it is one of the most widespread varieties in the world. It grows mainly in central Spain, on the vast Castilla-La Mancha plateau, and also in the Valdepeñas area.
The vine tolerates heat and drought. It is planted widely spaced, as a bush without a support, so that roots can reach water. This allows grapes to be grown without irrigation where other varieties struggle. Wine from Airén is usually simple, light and neutral, with low acidity. It is drunk young and cold.
Airén often goes into bulk white wines and also into brandy: spirit is distilled from it. Today winemakers look for ways to get higher-level wine from it, using old vines and cool fermentation. The variety is in the list of grape varieties and tied to Spanish wine. The area of Airén is shrinking, because many growers replace it with other varieties.
