π Aleatico
A red Muscat-type grape of Italy for sweet, aromatic wines.
Aleatico is a red Muscat-type grape from Italy. It gives sweet aromatic wines with the scent of rose, red berries and petals. It grows in Tuscany, especially on the island of Elba, and also in Apulia and Lazio. The variety is related to Muscat Blanc, and their aromas are similar.
The best wines are made by the passito method, where the berries are first dried on straw or on the vine to make them sweeter. A thick sweet red wine is then made from them. Dry and sparkling versions exist but are less common. The strength of the sweet wines is usually moderate or high. Aleatico di Gradoli in Lazio and Aleatico di Puglia in Apulia are known for their sweet versions.
The variety is tied to Italian wine, to Tuscany, Apulia and Lazio, and to names such as Elba Aleatico Passito, Pergola, Aleatico di Gradoli and Aleatico di Puglia. It is related to the Lacrima grape. Aleatico is served with desserts, fruit and biscuits, in small portions.
