Alsace Grand Cru Furstentum is one of the grand crus of Alsace in France. This is the name for the best vineyards of the region. The site lies by the villages of Kientzheim and Sigolsheim in the Haut-Rhin department. The name Furstentum means "principality".
The vineyard is sunny and on a slope, so berries ripen well. Riesling, Pinot Gris and Gewürztraminer grow here. Furstentum is famous for Gewürztraminer: its wines smell of rose, lychee and spices. The wines are white and still, from dry to sweet when berries are picked later.
The appellation is a protected designation of origin (PDO). A typical feature of Alsace grand crus is that the site is named separately and the rules require noble grape varieties. Furstentum can be compared with other Alsace grand crus, for example Goldert. Such wines usually age longer than ordinary Alsace wines and keep well. Such wines are recommended to taste both at once and after several years of ageing.
