🥃 American single malt whisky
US whisky from 100% malted barley at one distillery, aged in oak barrels of up to 700 L; the TTB standard applies from 19 Jan 2025.
American single malt whisky is whisky from a fermented mash of 100% malted barley, distilled entirely at one distillery in the United States. The TTB standard, in force since 19 January 2025, requires ageing only in the US, in oak barrels of up to 700 litres, and bottling at 40% ABV or more.
The standard took years. In October 2017 TTB received three petitions filed with the American Single Malt Whiskey Commission, a group of at least 75 whisky producers. The proposed rule (Notice No. 213) appeared on 29 July 2022, the final rule T.D. TTB-199 on 18 December 2024, and the new type was added to 27 CFR § 5.143.
Distillation is limited to 80% ABV. Barrels may be used, new charred or new uncharred, but must be oak and no larger than 700 litres. Neutral spirits, flavouring and blending materials are banned; only caramel colouring is allowed, and only if the label discloses it. Mashing and ageing need not happen at the distillery that distilled the spirit, but must stay within the US.
Whisky aged at least two years may be called straight American single malt whisky. Older labels get a transition period: they may be used on bottles filled before 19 January 2030 if the spirit met the previous rules.
Why it matters to you. Before 2025 US standards had no such type; now the name guarantees one distillery, only malted barley and ageing in the US. A blend of whiskies from several distilleries may not use it. Any caramel will be on the label. WHO: there is no safe level of alcohol.

Frequently asked questions
Since when has the American single malt whisky standard existed?
TTB adopted it in T.D. TTB-199, published on 18 December 2024; the rule took effect on 19 January 2025. The proposal (Notice No. 213) appeared on 29 July 2022.
Is it true that it must be aged only in new charred barrels, like bourbon?
No. The standard allows used, new charred and new uncharred oak barrels, as long as they hold no more than 700 litres and storage takes place only in the US.
Can caramel be added for colour?
Yes, but it is the only permitted additive and must be disclosed on the label. Neutral spirits, flavouring and blending materials are banned.
Can whiskies from several distilleries be blended and called American single malt?
No. The whisky must be distilled entirely at one US distillery; a blend from several distilleries does not qualify for the name.
What does straight American single malt whisky mean?
The same 100% malted barley whisky, aged at least two years in oak barrels of up to 700 litres.
