Rum from Barbados, where four distilleries operate: Mount Gay, West Indies Rum Distillery, Foursquare and St Nicholas Abbey; as of 2024 there is no protected name.

Barbados Rum is rum from the Caribbean island of Barbados, one of the oldest centres of rum making. Four distilleries work here: Mount Gay, West Indies Rum Distillery, Foursquare and St Nicholas Abbey. The house style, according to Cocktail Wonk, is an aged blend of pot still and column distillate, where column still rum usually predominates.

History. As early as 1657 Richard Ligon described the spirit of Barbados that was called «kill-devil». Mount Gay traces its history to a deed of sale from 1703 that mentions rum-making equipment. In 1893 the West India Rum Refinery was built — the first large column-distilling distillery on the island; today it makes over 80% of the island's rum.

Merchants and brands. At the start of the 20th century a law forbade distilleries to sell rum in lots smaller than 10 gallons. So young rum was bought by merchants, aged, blended and bottled; this is how brands such as Doorly's and R.L. Seale appeared. St Nicholas Abbey has operated since 2006, Foursquare since 1996.

Protecting the name. In 2022 Mount Gay, Foursquare and St Nicholas Abbey applied for a geographical indication. The draft rules provided for rum made only from sugar cane — molasses, syrup or juice — ageing on Barbados, and a ban on added sugar and flavourings. As of November 2024, according to Barbados Today, no protection had yet been granted.

Why this matters to you. While there is no protected name, «Barbados» on a label does not guarantee that all the rum comes from the island and has no added sugar. In the EU rum may not be flavoured, and may be sweetened up to 20 g/l. Check the producer and the strength. WHO reminds us: there is no safe amount of alcohol.
