📜 Barbaresco
A famous Nebbiolo red from the Langhe hills near Alba, Barolo's neighbour.
Barbaresco is a famous Italian red wine with a protected name (PDO) from Piedmont. It is made from the Nebbiolo grape on the Langhe hills near the town of Alba. The name comes from the small village of Barbaresco. Its closest neighbour and main counterpart is the wine Barolo.
The vineyards lie on limy marl soils, on south-facing slopes. Autumn here is foggy (the word Nebbiolo is linked to fog, nebbia). The wines are pale in colour but high in tannin and acidity, with aromas of cherry, rose, truffle and tar. By the rules Barbaresco is aged at least two years, part in oak barrels. The Riserva version is aged longer.
Barbaresco is tied to the Langhe and the Nebbiolo grape. It is often described as more elegant and softer than Barolo. It is best drunk after several years of keeping. It is served with red meat, game, truffles and aged cheeses. Good bottles are expensive, but more affordable ones exist.
