📜 Barbera d'Asti
Juicy red wines from Barbera grown on the hills around Asti.
Barbera d'Asti is a red wine from the Barbera grape grown on the hills around the town of Asti in northern Italy, in Piedmont. This is the Monferrato area, a hilly land where grapes have long been grown. The name is protected as a PDO. The wine is still, without bubbles.
Barbera is one of Piedmont's best-known red grapes. It has high acidity and little tannin, so the wine is fresh and juicy, with notes of cherry and plum. Because of the acidity it goes well with food: pasta, meat and cheese. Simple versions are drunk young, while the best are aged in barrels and kept for several years.
The Asti area is famous not only for red wine: sparkling Asti is also made here, but that is a different wine from another grape. So do not confuse them.
In Piedmont Barbera is an everyday wine, while Nebbiolo is more serious and rarer. They complement each other.
