🍇 Barbera
A red Italian grape from Piedmont; its wines are juicy with marked acidity.
Barbera is a red grape from Piedmont in Italy. Its wines are juicy, with clear acidity and soft tannins. It is one of the most widely planted red grapes in Italy.
The variety comes from the north of the country. Barbera grows well in Piedmont, where it makes Barbera d'Asti, Barbera d'Alba and Barbera del Monferrato. It is also planted in Lombardy (for example in Oltrepò Pavese) and in Emilia-Romagna, in Colli Piacentini.
It has itself become a parent of several new varieties, among them Albarossa, Terzi 1 and Brik.
The acidity makes the wine fresh and good with food. Barbera can be simple and light, or aged in oak and fuller. It depends on the place and the winemaker. Its colour is usually deep ruby. When young, the wine smells of cherry and red berries, and with ageing deeper notes appear.
