📜 Bolgheri Sassicaia

A famous red wine from Cabernet on the Tuscan coast, the only estate in Italy with its own DOC.

Bolgheri Sassicaia is a red wine from Tuscany, from the Bolgheri area on the Tyrrhenian coast of Italy. Its special feature is that the designation of origin (PDO) belongs to a single estate, Tenuta San Guido. This is a rare case in Italy. The wine is made from Cabernet Sauvignon with some Cabernet Franc. These grapes are typical of Bordeaux, not Tuscany, but they took root here. The soils are light, and sea air softens the heat. The wine is dark and full, with tannin and notes of blackcurrant, cedar and herbs. It is matured in oak barrels. The estate first made wine in the 1940s for itself, and commercial release began in the late 1960s. Many call this wine the start of the "Super Tuscan" movement: wines created outside local tradition. Later it was given its own designation. The wine ages well for decades. It is served with meat and aged cheese, and the cork is opened in advance so the wine can open up.
