Red wines from the right bank of the Gironde around the town of Bourg, opposite the Médoc.
Bourg / Côtes de Bourg is a wine appellation on the right bank of the Gironde in France, producing mostly red wines. Bourg, or Côtes de Bourg, is an appellation on the right bank of the Gironde estuary in France, around the town of Bourg. It lies opposite the Médoc and belongs to the Bordeaux region. The name is protected as a PDO.
Mainly red wines are made here. The main grapes are Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Malbec. White wines are made too, but fewer. All are still wines, that is, not sparkling. The vineyards lie on hills above the river, with views over the water.
Bourg is closely tied to neighbouring Blaye: both fall within the "Blaye and Bourg" territory. Bourg wines are usually simpler and cheaper than those of the best-known left-bank châteaux. Style depends on soil, grape and vintage. The reds usually go well with meat and cheese. The names "Bourg" and "Côtes de Bourg" on a label refer to the same appellation.
