🍇 Malbec
A red grape from south-west France; today Argentina's leading variety.
Malbec is a red grape from south-west France. There it is also known as Côt and Auxerrois. Today it is mainly associated with Argentina, where it became the country's leading red grape.
Malbec's parentage is known: it is linked to the varieties Prunelard and Magdeleine Noire des Charentes. In France it is made into wine in Cahors, the Lot valley and other parts of the south-west. Cahors wine is traditionally very dark. Malbec also appears in some Bordeaux blends, as well as in the Loire Valley.
Malbec wine is usually rich, with dark berry flavours and soft tannins. Rosé is made from it too.
Because the grape has many wine areas, it often appears on labels as a grape name, not only as a place name.
