🥃 Captain Morgan
Diageo rum brand named after the privateer Henry Morgan; the flagship is the spiced Original Spiced Gold (35% ABV); rum for the US is distilled on St. Croix.
Captain Morgan is a rum brand of the British company Diageo, named after the 17th-century Welsh privateer Henry Morgan. Its best-known product is the spiced Original Spiced Gold at 35% ABV with vanilla and spices; in the EU and the United Kingdom, because of the flavourings and the strength, it is classified not as rum but as a rum-based spirit drink.
The brand was started by the Canadian company Seagram. According to the story told by VinePair and Wikipedia, its head Samuel Bronfman bought the Jamaican Long Pond distillery in the early 1940s, which supplied rum to the Levy brothers' pharmacy in Kingston; the pharmacy infused it with herbs and spices. In 1944 Seagram founded the company Captain Morgan Rum. The spiced Original Spiced reached the US market in the early 1980s (1984 according to Wikipedia and VinePair). In 2001, after Seagram's assets were divided, the brand passed to Diageo.
Since 2010–2011 Diageo has distilled the rum for the American market at its own distillery on the island of St. Croix (US Virgin Islands); before that it was made by a third-party producer in Puerto Rico. For the spiced versions, the finished rum is flavoured; Diageo names vanilla, other natural flavourings and spices. The brand does not disclose the recipes or the ageing time of individual products, so we do not give them.
Diageo's range includes Original Spiced Gold, White Rum, the apple-flavoured Sliced Apple and the non-alcoholic Spiced Gold 0.0%; various markets also sell Dark Rum (40% ABV), Black Spiced and a 100 Proof version. According to Diageo, the brand is present in more than 100 countries.
Why this matters to you. Different drinks are sold under one name. White Rum (37.5% ABV) is rum, while the spiced Original Spiced Gold with vanilla at 35% is not considered rum in the EU. So in recipes that call for real rum, check the name and the percentage on the label. The non-alcoholic Spiced Gold 0.0% is a separate product. The WHO reminds us that no level of alcohol consumption is safe.
