A tiny single-estate appellation in the northern Rhône Valley with white wines from Viognier.

Château-Grillet is a tiny appellation in the northern Rhône valley, France. The entire vineyard belongs to a single estate, so the name refers to one property. It is one of the smallest wine names in the country, covering only a few hectares.

The vineyards lie in a steep, south-facing amphitheatre on granite terraces. White wines are made here from the Viognier grape. Viognier is an aromatic variety with notes of apricot, peach and flowers. Nearby lies the Condrieu appellation, where Viognier also grows.

The wine is full, with a rich aroma but good acidity. It is drunk both young and aged. It is served chilled with fish, poultry and soft cheese.

Château-Grillet shows how a name can belong to a single estate. Similarly, Spain has Vino de Pago. The name is protected, like other French wines, and covers still white wines. Alcohol is for adults.
