🥃 Chiemseer Klosterlikör
Herbal liqueur of the Benedictine abbey of Frauenwörth on Frauenchiemsee island (Lake Chiemsee, Bavaria); EU protected name in the liqueur category.
Chiemseer Klosterlikör (Chiemsee monastery liqueur) is a herbal liqueur made in the Benedictine women’s abbey of Frauenwörth on Frauenchiemsee island in Bavaria’s Lake Chiemsee. The name is on the EU list of protected spirit names in the liqueur category, alongside Ettaler and Benediktbeurer Klosterlikör. Some catalogues list it among bitters, but it is a liqueur.
The abbey. According to its own history, the monastery was founded around 772 by Duke Tassilo III of Bavaria, and the church was consecrated in 782. In 1803 the community was dissolved, but the nuns were allowed to stay; in 1838, under King Ludwig I, it was re-established, and in 1901 it again received the status of an abbey.
Pharmacy and liqueur. The abbey writes that distilling here may go back as far as the 14th century. After secularisation the monastery pharmacy made bitter tinctures and herbal liqueurs in small batches, and because of demand the abbey restored its own liqueur kitchen in 1907.
What is made. Today the abbey’s liqueur kitchen makes the sweet Klosterlikör, the semi-bitter Halbbitter, the mild Magenbitter and the fresh Klostergeist, using a mix of organically grown herbs. Halbbitter and Magenbitter are more bitter and closer to bitters. All of them are sold in the monastery shop on the island.
Why this matters to you. A protected name means that “Chiemseer Klosterlikör” cannot come from another place. It is a liqueur: under EU rules it has at least 15% ABV and a lot of sugar, so a serving is high in calories. The WHO reminds us that there is no safe level of alcohol consumption.
