🍷 Crémant
French sparkling wine made by the traditional method outside Champagne.
Crémant is a French sparkling wine made the same way as Champagne, but outside Champagne. That means the bubbles form in the bottle, not in a large tank. This route is called the traditional method.
After the second fermentation, the wine rests in the bottle on its lees. For crémant the total ageing is at least one year, part of it on the lees. It makes the taste softer and the bubbles finer.
The name is used in several French regions, for example Alsace and Burgundy. There is also crémant from the Loire. Crémant is made in neighbouring Luxembourg too. Mousseux is a similar French sparkling wine. All of them belong to the wider group of sparkling wines.
For comparison: crémant is often chosen as a cheaper alternative to Champagne, but it is a separate wine with its own rules and its own grape varieties.
