Slightly sweet Muscat sparkling wine from the Rhône Valley, made by the ancestral method.

Clairette de Die is a sweetish Muscat sparkling wine from the valley of the Drôme, a tributary of the Rhône, in south-east France. It is a protected AOC name. The main grape is Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains, at least 75%, with the local Clairette making up the rest.

The best-known version, Clairette de Die Tradition, is made by a local form of the ancestral method. The wine starts fermenting in a tank at low temperature, is then bottled, and keeps fermenting there. Not all the sugar turns into alcohol, so the wine stays sweetish. Before sale it is filtered and moved into new bottles under pressure, with no added liqueur.

Alcohol is low, around 7–8%. The taste carries a bright Muscat aroma of grapes, rose and peach. Clairette de Die is served with desserts and fruit or as a light aperitif. It shows how an old way of making sparkling wine still lives on in French wine.
