π Trebbiano Toscano
A white Italian grape called Ugni Blanc in France; used for wine and Cognac.
Trebbiano Toscano is a white wine grape, one of the most widely planted in Italy. In France it is called Ugni Blanc. It goes both into wine and into the distillate for Cognac. Its homeland is Italy: it is grown in Tuscany and Emilia-Romagna. The berries give plenty of juice with high acidity and low sugar. So the wines are usually light, fresh and neutral, with notes of lemon and green apple. It is also used for Vin Santo, the Italian sweet wine from dried grapes. In France, Ugni Blanc covers large areas. Wine is made from it and then distilled into Cognac and Armagnac. The acidity and low strength suited to distillation make the wine a convenient base for brandy. The grape is valued not for bright flavour but for reliability and high yields. One variety being known under different names in different countries is common in winemaking.
