📜 Gaillac

Appellation ✔ Checked: 10.2026 · sources: 1

One of France's oldest wine areas, on the Tarn River, with local grapes and sparkling wines.

Gaillac is one of the oldest wine places in France, lying along the Tarn river in the south-west of the country. Vineyards have been tended here since Roman times. The appellation is protected (PDO) and belongs to the Upper Country area, near Cahors and Fronton.

The special feature of Gaillac is its local grapes, which are hardly found anywhere else. Among whites grow Mauzac and Len de l'El, among reds Duras, Fer, Prunelard and Ondenc. Syrah is added too. So Gaillac wines do not resemble Bordeaux or Burgundy: they have a taste of their own, fresh and spicy.

Red, white and rosé wines are made here, as well as sparkling and sweet ones. Sparkling Gaillac is made by an old method in which fermentation finishes in the bottle, and it turns out soft. The area is not very famous, so wines are often inexpensive. For the curious it is a chance to get to know French wine that few people talk about.
