🍇 Syrah

Grape variety ✔ Checked: 10.2026 · sources: 4

A red grape from the Rhône Valley; in Australia it is called Shiraz.

Syrah is a red grape from the Rhône valley in France. In Australia and some other countries it is called Shiraz. It is the same grape, but wines from it can differ a lot in style.

The grape came from a cross of two French varieties, Dureza and Mondeuse Blanche. Syrah gives dark, full wine with aromas of black berries, pepper and spice. In cool areas, for example the northern Rhône (Hermitage, Côte-Rôtie, Cornas), the wines are more peppery. In warm ones they are softer and fruitier.

Syrah is grown in Languedoc, Provence, Spain and Italy (for example in Sicily). It is often blended with Grenache and Mourvèdre: this blend is called GSM. In the Rhône it also goes into Châteauneuf-du-Pape.

The grape has many descendants, among them Durif and Rubin. Syrah suits long ageing in oak and in bottle. The taste depends on climate and on the winemaker.
