🍇 Mauzac
A white grape from southern France; the base of Limoux sparkling wines and Gaillac wines.
Mauzac is a white grape from southern France. It grows in the valley of the river Tarn, around Gaillac, and near Limoux in Languedoc. The berries ripen late, so the variety needs a long warm summer.
Wine from Mauzac smells of apple, honey and dry herbs, with noticeable acidity. The grape’s main use is sparkling wine. It is the base of Blanquette de Limoux and Crémant de Limoux. It also appears in still Gaillac wines. There is a variant, Mauzac Rosé, with pinkish berries.
Blanquette de Limoux is considered one of the oldest sparkling wines. “Blanquette” is the local name of Mauzac. Sparkling wine is still made there with old methods, such as ageing on the lees.
Mauzac is one of those French grapes well known in the south but rarely seen outside it. It is an example of a local variety that shapes the character of an area and its wines.
