📜 Cahors
A dark Malbec red from the Lot River valley around Cahors.
Cahors is a protected appellation in south-west France, around the town of Cahors in the Lot valley. A dark red wine is made here from Malbec, which locals once called "Côt". Cahors' old nickname is "black wine", because of its very dark colour.
The main grape is Malbec, at least 70% of the blend. Merlot and Tannat may be added. The wines are dense, tannic, with notes of black berries, plums and spice. The vineyards lie on slopes and terraces above the Lot river. Soils are limestone and gravel, summers are warm and nights cool.
Cahors is tied to the South-West of France and to Malbec, which today is better known as the grape of Argentina. Young Cahors can be tannic, but after a few years of ageing it becomes softer. The wine suits meat, game and cheese. It is taken seriously, yet prices remain moderate.
