📍 Haut-Pays
Inland zones including Cahors, Gaillac and Fronton.
Haut-Pays, the upper country, covers the inland wine zones of south-western France, away from the sea and Bordeaux. It includes Cahors, Gaillac and Fronton. Other appellations belong here too: Côtes de Millau, Coteaux du Quercy, Côtes du Tarn, Marcillac and Estaing.
Each zone has its own grapes. In Cahors the main grape is Malbec, which gives dark, dense wines here. In Fronton the main one is Négrette, and in Gaillac it is Duras, Mauzac and other local varieties. All of them are little known outside the region and give wines of individual character.
Historically the region traded wine along the rivers, downstream to Bordeaux. But Bordeaux merchants long limited its sales, so local wines developed separately. Haut-Pays is part of the wider south-west of France. It is a good example of a region where old varieties and traditions survived, and the wines differ greatly from the familiar French ones.
