A light red grape of Piedmont; its wines are pale and tart.

Grignolino is a pale red grape from Piedmont in north-western Italy. The name comes from a Piedmontese word meaning "pips": the berries hold many, and they give the wine its astringency.

The grape's special trait is that the skins of the berries are thin and carry little colour. So the wine is pale, almost pinkish, although technically it is red. At the same time it has plenty of tannin and acidity, so the taste is fresh and firm. The aroma recalls wild strawberry, white pepper, rose and dry herbs.

The best places for the grape are the hills of Monferrato. Known wines include Grignolino del Monferrato Casalese and Grignolino d'Asti. The grape is fussy: it ripens with difficulty and gives an unsteady crop, so not much of it is planted.

The wine is best drunk young and slightly chilled, and it goes well with light snacks. The grape belongs to Italian wine and to the general list of grape varieties.
