π Kotsifali
A red grape from the island of Crete that makes soft, spicy wines.
Kotsifali is a red grape variety from the Greek island of Crete. It gives soft, spicy wines of low density, with aromas of red berries, pepper and herbs. The colour is paler than many reds and the tannins are soft. The variety copes well with the heat typical of Cretan summers.
It is grown mainly around the city of Heraklion, in the Peza and Archanes areas. Both have protected names. The wine is more often made from Kotsifali together with the local grape Mandilari: Kotsifali gives aroma and softness, while Mandilari adds colour and tannin. Such a blend is fuller. Single-variety wines and rosΓ©s also exist.
Kotsifali is tied to Greek wine, Crete and the Archanes and Peza areas. It is one of the key red grapes of the island. Winegrowing in Crete goes back thousands of years, and Kotsifali remains part of this heritage. The wine is served with lamb dishes, grilled vegetables and cheese. It is better slightly chilled.
