An island with terraces of white Forastera.

La Gomera is a small volcanic island in the Canary archipelago, in the Atlantic Ocean off Africa. It is part of the Canary Islands. The island is almost round, cut by deep ravines, and the vineyards sit on terraces held up by stone walls.

The main white grape is Forastera Gomera. It gives dry, fresh wines with citrus and herbal aromas, often with a slight salty touch. Among reds are Listán Negro and other local grapes. Vineyards are often old, and the soils are volcanic.

The total vineyard area is small and work on the terraces is laborious, so wines are made in small batches. They hardly leave the Canaries, but among enthusiasts some bottles have become well known.

The island is also known for its laurel forests, protected by UNESCO in Garajonay National Park, and for the whistled language Silbo. For a visitor, wine is one part of local culture. Neighbouring islands, Tenerife and La Palma, produce more wine and have their own appellations. White wine from La Gomera suits fish and local cooking, for example stewed meat and vegetables.
