Lanson is a Champagne house in Reims, in the Marne department. According to the house, it opened its doors in the heart of Reims in 1760; Wikidata gives the same year. In 1798, the house says, it adopted the Maltese cross as its emblem in honour of the founder’s son, a member of the Order of Malta; as the “Croix Lanson” it still appears on the bottles.
According to the house, the Clos Lanson, a walled plot of centuries-old vines in central Reims, has been vinified separately since 2006, and its first vintage was released in 2016. The range includes Le Black Création, Le Rosé Création, Le Blanc de Blancs, Le Green Bio-Organic, Le Vintage and Le Clos Lanson.
Champagne is a wine with a protected designation of origin (PDO). The bubbles come only from a second fermentation in the bottle, the wine is aged for at least 15 months before sale (36 for vintage), and all production takes place only within the delimited area. Lanson is a brand; Champagne is the name of a place.
Why it matters to you. Blanc de blancs and a vintage year on the label are terms set by the rules, while “Création” or “Black” are the house’s own names. The WHO reminds: there is no safe level of alcohol.
