📍 Lombardy
The Milan region, with Franciacorta and mountainous Valtellina.
Lombardy is a region in northern Italy around Milan. Different wines are made here: sparkling, reds from mountain valleys and light wines by the lakes. Lombardy belongs to Italian wine. The best-known zones are Franciacorta, Oltrepò Pavese and Valtellina. Franciacorta is known for sparkling wine made by the traditional method. Oltrepò Pavese, south of the river Po, makes sparkling, red and white wines, including from Pinot Noir. Valtellina lies in the Alps on terraces above the Adda river, and Nebbiolo is grown here. It is called Chiavennasca and gives light, elegant reds. Other designations include Capriano del Colle, Valcalepio, Lambrusco Mantovano, Moscato di Scanzo, Lugana and more. Grapes include Barbera, Chardonnay, Croatina and Bonarda. There are many wines from local grapes and small zones. Lombardy shows how much variety one region can hold. Different parts differ in climate, altitude and tradition, and the wines range from light sparkling to deep reds.
