📍 Friuli-Venezia Giulia
The north-east by Slovenia, famous for white and orange wines.
Friuli-Venezia Giulia is a region in north-eastern Italy, on the border with Slovenia. It is famous for white and orange wines.
The main wine zones are Collio, Colli Orientali del Friuli, Grave del Friuli and Carso. There are also Friuli Annia, Friuli Aquileia, Friuli Isonzo and Friuli Latisana. Pinot Grigio, Sauvignon Blanc and Friulano are grown here, along with local grapes: Picolit, Terrano, Refosco, Ribolla Gialla and others. Picolit makes a rare sweet wine.
Orange wines are made from white grapes left on the skins, like red wine. Ribolla Gialla and others are made this way. The region's wines are clean and aromatic and are valued by connoisseurs. The region belongs to Italian wine but has its own character because of the nearby Alps, the Adriatic and Slovenia. Hills and plains give different styles: light, fresh wines from the plains and richer ones from the hills. The region's white wines are often drunk young, with fish and light dishes.
