🍇 Croatina
A red grape of northern Italy, known for the wines of Oltrepò Pavese.
Croatina is a red grape from northern Italy. It grows in Lombardy, Emilia-Romagna and Piedmont. It is best known for the wines of Oltrepò Pavese south of the river Po, where wine from it is called Bonarda.
Croatina gives dark, purple wines with good acidity and noticeable tannins. They can be still or slightly sparkling, like Bonarda. In blends Croatina often sits beside Barbera: together they form wines such as Buttafuoco and Sangue di Giuda. The grape also goes into Gutturnio from the Colli Piacentini.
Croatina is a local grape, and it is a way to get to know Italian traditions. It is a simple everyday wine that goes well with sausages, salami and Lombard cooking. It is drunk young or after a little ageing.
