The highest sommelier title, earned by only a handful of people worldwide.
Master Sommelier is the highest title in the world of sommeliers. It is awarded by the Court of Master Sommeliers. Very few people receive it: over its whole history only a few hundred people worldwide.
To become a master one has to pass several levels of exams. The last and hardest tests three things. First is theory: knowledge of wines, countries, grapes, laws and drinks. Second is service: the ability to serve wine to guests at the table, open a bottle, decant and answer questions. Third is blind tasting: identifying six wines by smell and taste in a short time.
The title is earned after many years of preparation. Passing on the first try is rare, and many pass only after several attempts.
Master Sommelier is the top step in the sommelier profession. It is held by someone who knows wine and also knows how to talk to guests and match drinks to food.
