🍇 Mavro
The most widespread red grape of Cyprus, the basis of the sweet wine Commandaria.
Mavro is the most widely planted red grape in Cyprus. The word mavro means black in Greek. The vines grow on the slopes of the Troodos mountains, around Limassol, Nicosia, Paphos and Larnaca.
Mavro is made into various wines: red, rosé and simple table wines. But its main role is in the sweet wine Commandaria. This is an ancient Cypriot drink made from sun-dried grapes in villages in the south of the island. Mavro goes into Commandaria together with the white grape Xynisteri.
Mavro is tied to the wine villages of Limassol and to other parts of the island. The vine is undemanding and tolerates heat and dry slopes, which is why it is so widespread.
Wine from Mavro can be light, with soft tannins and red berry notes. Like all grapes of the island, it reflects the warm, dry Mediterranean climate.
