πΊοΈ Cypriot wine
The country's wine and winemaking: regions, grapes and appellations.
Cypriot wine is the wine and winemaking of the island of Cyprus. Wine has been made here since ancient times. The island lies in the Mediterranean, summers are warm and dry, and vineyards grow on the slopes of the Troodos mountains.
The main areas are Limassol, Paphos, Nicosia (Pitsilia) and Larnaca. Local red varieties are Mavro and Maratheftiko, and the white is Xynisteri. The island's best-known wine is Commandaria, a sweet wine from dried grapes. It is considered one of the oldest named wines.
Cyprus is also known for other grape products. Zivania is a strong drink from grape pomace. Petimezi is a thick grape syrup. Mustalevria is a dessert made of grape juice and flour. There are also retsina with pine resin, and ouzo. There is also soujouko, a sweet of nuts in thickened grape juice, a relative of churchkhela. Cyprus is in the European Union, so its wines are labelled under common European rules.
