🍇 Xynisteri
Cyprus's main white grape, giving fresh, light wines.
Xynisteri is the main white grape of Cyprus. It has grown on the island for many centuries and copes well with heat and dry summers. Vines are often planted on the slopes of the Troodos mountains, where nights are cooler and grapes ripen more slowly.
Wine from Xynisteri is usually dry, light and fresh, with soft acidity and notes of citrus and white flowers. There are also more serious wines aged in barrels. Simple wines from this grape are best drunk young, while they are fresh.
The variety grows in many wine areas of the island: Limassol and its wine villages, Paphos, Larnaca, Nicosia, and the zones of Laona-Akamas and Vouni Panayia. Xynisteri is also used for Commandaria, a sweet wine often counted among the oldest in the world, where it goes together with the red grape Mavro.
The grape belongs to the general list of grape varieties and is closely tied to Cypriot wine.
